1945年太平洋戰爭結束,隨著臺灣政權轉移,身處於各博物館的標本有的四處流落,甚至荒廢,有的失去文件紀錄,然而標本是一種目的性的產物,當其目的性不再存在時,懸宕的意志與欲望讓祂們變成一種很尷尬的存在,隨著現代化的進程,祂們的身體成為物種的代表,我們該如何觀看這些被佚失的標本並理解祂們?本次展覽試圖在科學與歷史中透過非科學的方式與祂們溝通並共作,讓祂們在科學之外、帝國之外、歷史之外成為自己。
Following the end of the Pacific War in 1945 and the regime change in Taiwan, specimens in various museums were scattered, even abandoned, some without documentation. However, specimens are commodities of purpose. When this purpose no longer prevails, their suspended will and desires become an embarrassing existence. With the process of modernization, their bodies are assigned representatives of species. How should we regard and understand these dispersed and lost specimens? This exhibition strives to communicate and collaborate with them through non-scientific methods of science and history, enabling the specimens to become themselves beyond science, beyond empire, and beyond history.

藝術家蔡咅璟近幾年來的作品主要以鳥類為題材創作,然而以鳥為題並非刻意所為,人與動物之間的關係是蔡咅璟更關注的核心本質,對他而言人身為動物不可能決然孤立於這個世界,但現今的世界人類發展出極其複雜的生存模式與動物的關係也變得極其複雜,在這樣的結構底下該如何去思考或者產生與動物之間例外的關係似乎有其必要性。
此次展出的三件作品中,主要的動物為: 大赤啄木、藍孔雀、山麻雀,剛好分別是野生動物、圈養動物、聚落動物,因此蔡咅璟藉由科學、神秘學、田野調查、工作坊乃至於藝術生產機制與生態保育,從過去到現在至未來提出一種人與動物之間的關係與想像,最終藝術作為一種社會性參與提供與動物產生深切關係的可能性。
Tsai Pou-Ching's recent practices often encompassed bird forms. However, birds are not his focus per se, but rather the relationship between humans and animals. As animals, humans can't be isolated from the world. Indeed, in today's world, humans have developed highly complex survival networks and relationships with animals. Therefore, thinking about the exceptional human relationship with animals seems more necessary now than ever.
The three birds presented in Tsai Pou-Ching's works are the Great Red Woodpecker, Blue Peacock, and Mountain Sparrow. They are representations of wild animals, captive animals, and settlement animals, respectively. Therefore, through science, mysticism, field research, workshops, art production methods and ecological conservation, Tsai Pou-Ching proposes a novel relationship between humans and animals from the past to the present. Indeed, his art, as social participation, provides the possibility of in-depth connections with natural world.
